Targu Jiu Art Museum

The Museum of Art is located inside the Central Park of Targu Jiu, close to the masterpieces of Constantin Brancusi, surrounded by lush vegetation. It can be easily reached a short walk from the Table of Silence towards the northern extremity of the park. Although not as rich as the large art museums of bigger cities, the small collection provides an extremely rewarding experience. It features several collections organized according to art history and provenience of artists.

These include the oldest and most precious exhibits created by the Flemish and Italian schools (17th century), but also important Romanian artists, including some of Gorj County. Other collections include contemporary art and religious art from the county, with very impressive old Romanian icons. The most interesting masterpieces belong to famous Romanian artists like Vasile Blendea, Alexandru Ciucurencu, Corneliu Baba, Gheorghe Petrascu and others. The museum is open each day, except Monday, from 9 am to 5 pm.

Brancusi Photo Collection

A small collection of photographs and documents connected to the life and work of Constantin Brancusi can be visited in Targu Jiu. It is located inside a beautiful house in the Central Park, right on the pathway along the Jiu River. The splendid house was built in 1925-1926 by following the model of the Cula of Groserea. It features photographs with the grand master of sculpture, some photographs taken by Brancusi himself, as well as documents about his life and work.

Cartianu House

This is truly one of the most interesting architectural monuments of Gorj County, a beautiful house that was originally built as a cula (traditional fortified house of the region). Located in the village of Cartiu, part of the Turcinesti Commune, the Cartianu House is about 15 km north of Targu Jiu. Situated next to a charming little creek and close to the foot of the mountains, it is a splendid example of the noble house, modified after being built as cula around 1760. In the exterior, visitors are impressed by the three levels of strong brick walls, surrounded by intricate wooden verandas. The beautiful house has been transformed into a small museum, with interesting ethnographic exhibits and documents about the history of the Cartianu family.

Ecaterina Teodoroiu Memorial House

The World War I heroine of Gorj County was born in 1894 in the Vadeni village, today part of Targu Jiu. The small family house has been beautifully preserved, surrounded by modern houses along the Ecaterina Teodoroiu Boulevard. It has been declared a historical monument and can be visited several kilometers from the city center of Targu Jiu. The small memorial house is actually a tiny shack with two little rooms, covered in wooden shingles and dated in 1884. Ecaterina Teodoroiu was born in this poor house that today contains documents, photographs and objects that belonged to the heroine. At just over 20 years old, she decides to take active part in the war to defend her country, becoming remarked for her acts of heroism and patriotism. Reaching the sub-lieutenant rank, she died in august 1917 while fighting at the front of her platoon.

Tudor Vladimirescu Memorial House

Tudor Vladimirescu, one of the most important historical figures of Gorj County, was born in 1780 in the village of Vladimir, about 50 km south of Targu Jiu. His memorial house can be visited by following the 67 and 67B roads from Targu Jiu, then continuing with the 662 road to Vladimir. Tudor Vladimirescu grew up in a peasant family, becoming an important military and administration leader in Oltenia region. In 1821, he led a large revolution against the foreign rulers of Wallachia, which started in Gorj with the Proclamation of Pades (a monument stands there today). The Revolution of Tudor Vladimirescu was a battle cry for freedom and justice, yet he never achieved it fully, being betrayed by the nobility and foreign powers. The memorial house of Vladimir presents documents and objects that belonged to the hero, all presented in his small wooden native house.

Wooden Crosses Museum

The only Crosses Museum of its kind in Romania is located in a remote village close to Targu Carbunesti town. The village of Macesu can be reached by taking the 675 road east of Targu Carbunesti. It was established in 2009 and features old crosses created by the traditional craftsmen of Gorj County. Coming in all shapes and sizes, some of them with paintings and ornaments, these crosses offer a unique image over an ancient craft. Although more difficult to reach, this small museum is well worth a visit for its eccentric theme.
